Vertigo Films: Branching out into film distribution

10:54 / Posted by Michael /

Although Vertigo started out as an independent U.K film production company, their commercial success has allowed them to branch out into film distribution, as they make a leap towards becoming one of the major european film companies, such as Pathé. Vertigo have started to distribute more films; however, the films Vertigo distributes are typically small, low budget, independent films such as: London to Brighton, The Escapist, Doghouse and the sequels in the 'Pusher' series. Vertigo are focused mainly within Theatrical distribution rights, as opposed to DVD and Blu Ray distribution rights (Blu Ray is owned by Sony, so they would have monopolistic power within Blu Ray sales). This means that Vertigo still look for distribution deals with major companies such as Universal on films that are produced by Vertigo; an example is Nick Love's remake of 'The Firm'. Striking such a deal with a company of Universal's power and size within the film industry would naturally create commercial appeal, as people associate Universal with mainstream success and films with a wide target audience.
